Start here if you've never camped before.
Start with an easy region
Rajasthan desert camps (Oct–Mar) or Coorg in Karnataka are forgiving, accessible, and don't require permits. Save Ladakh for trip 3 or 4.
Go with a guided camp first
Guided eco-camps provide tents, meals, and a local guide. You learn the ropes without the gear investment. Budget ₹2,000–₹5,000 per night all-in.
Rent gear, don't buy
Rent a tent and sleeping bag from a local outfitter for your first trip. Only invest in your own gear once you know you love it.
Check weather 48 hours before
Indian mountain weather changes fast. Always check IMD (imd.gov.in) and a local WhatsApp group for the area 48 hours before departure.
Leave a trip plan with someone
Tell a friend or family member your exact route, campsite, and expected return. Share your live location if you have signal.
Pack out everything you pack in
India's wilderness is fragile. Carry waste bags, use existing fire rings only, and camp at least 60 m from water sources.
